چکیده

Adsorption by granular activated carbon (GAC) has been widely employed to remove various synthetic organic contaminants (SOCs) from water supplies [1]. A factor complicating the design and effectiveness of activated carbon for the treatment of potable waters is the presence of naturally occurring dissolved organic matter (NOM) in natural waters. The presence of NOM can significantly reduce the efficiency of activated carbon processes, by competing with targeted SOCs, and thus reducing SOC uptake and rate of adsorption. In fixed-bed reactors, the mass-transfer zone of NOM components can move more rapidly than that of the targeted SOCs. Therefore, at some positions within the bed, the NOM adsorbs ahead of the SOC, and fouls or “preloads” the carbon. It has been shown that the preloading phenomenon can significantly reduce the performance of fixed bed adsorbers [2,3]. Ideally, an activated carbon that exhibits maximum SOC removal but minimum NOM uptake is expected to provide a longer service time reducing the overall cost of water treatment process.

Experimental and Theoretical Study on the CH4 Adsorption by Granular and Microporous Activated Carbon

Adsorbed natural gas (ANG) by Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) has been widely investigated as an alternative to CNG and LNG technologies for storage and transportation of natural gas. In the present work, a theoretical and experimental study was conducted to accurately determine the amount of adsorption of CH4 by GAC. To carry out the experiments, the volumetric method was used up to 4 MPa at c...

Pecan shell-based granular activated carbon for treatment of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in municipal wastewater.

The present investigation was undertaken to compare the adsorption efficiency of pecan shell-based granular activated carbon with the adsorption efficiency of the commercial carbon Filtrasorb 200 with respect to uptake of the organic components responsible for the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of municipal wastewater. Adsorption efficiencies for these two sets of carbons (experimental and commer...

Removal of copper (II) from aqueous solutions by adsorption onto granular activated carbon in the presence of competitor ions

In this work, the removal of copper from an aqueous solution by granular activated carbon (GAC) in the presence of competitor ions was studied. A batch adsorption was carried out and different parameters such as pH, contact time, initial copper concentration and competitor ions concentration were changed to determine the optimum conditions for adsorption. The optimum pH required for maximum ads...

ADSORPTION OF p-NITROPHENOL IN THREE DIFFERENT ACTIVATED CARBONS AT DIFFERENT pH

Adsorption of p-Nitrophenol by three different activated carbons (F100, S.E.I. and B.D.H.) was carried out at 301 K and at controlled pH conditions. Two different adsorption models (Langmuir model and Freundlich model) were studied and compared. The adsorption capacity of the carbons depends on the Point of Zero Charge (PZC) and surface area of the carbons. Adsorption of the solute at higher pH...
